Applite

Troubleshooting

Most problems fall into one of these. If yours does not, ask on Discord or send an email.

Applite will not finish setting up

The first time you open Applite it downloads its own copy of Homebrew, which takes a few seconds and needs a working internet connection. If it does not complete, check that you are online, then quit Applite and open it again.

If you are on a company or university network, a firewall may be blocking the download. Applite can use your system proxy settings, which you can set up under Proxy in Settings.

An app will not install

Work through these in order.

  1. Try again. Downloads fail for ordinary reasons, and the app’s own servers are sometimes briefly unavailable.
  2. Open the app’s entry and choose Get Info to check whether it has a warning attached. Some apps are marked as deprecated or no longer supported.
  3. If Applite shows an error, open the full details from the error message. That text is what to include if you report the problem.
  4. If nothing installs at all, rather than just this one app, your Homebrew installation is probably damaged. See below.
An app I already have does not show as installed

Applite tracks the apps you installed through it. An app you installed by hand, from a disk image or an installer, is invisible to it.

To bring one under Applite, find it in Applite and install it. That replaces the copy in your Applications folder, and your settings and data are kept. From then on it updates and uninstalls like anything else.

Applite says its Homebrew installation is missing or damaged

Applite repairs this itself in most cases: quit it and open it again, and it will put the installation back while keeping every app you have installed. Make sure you are running the current version first, since older versions could not do this.

If it still will not work:

  1. Open Settings and check Brew Executable Path. If you are using Applite’s own Homebrew, the first option should be selected. A green checkmark means the path is good. Relaunch Applite after changing it.
  2. If the path is right and it still fails, go to Manage Homebrew in the sidebar and choose Reinstall Homebrew.

Reinstalling unlinks the apps you installed through Applite. They are not deleted and they keep working, but Applite will no longer update or uninstall them until you install them through Applite again.

An app installed, but Applite cannot open it

Applite finds an installed app by looking for it in your Applications folder. If you renamed it or moved it elsewhere, Applite may not be able to launch it, though the app itself is fine and you can open it from Finder as usual.

The Updates section is empty when I know updates exist

This was a bug in version 1.4.0 and is fixed. Check you are on the current version, using Applite then Check for Updates in the menu bar, and update if not.

Otherwise, refresh the catalog with Refresh App Catalog in the menu bar, or Command R.

Downloads are very slow

Applite can download from mirrors, which is a great deal faster in some parts of the world, mainland China in particular. Turn this on under Mirrors in Settings and pick the one nearest you.

Nothing here fixed it

Report it on GitHub or ask on Discord. Please include your macOS version, your Applite version, the app you were installing, and the full error text if you saw one.
